To describe a past action/fact in its duration (as going on and not completed):
Guardavo la televisione quando c’è stato il terremoto.
I was watching TV when the earthquake struck.
For past actions repeated regularly as a habit:
Prendevamo sempre il cafffè alle 11.
We used to have a coffee at 11 o'clock.
